Need info...
Looking to buy a handgun for protection and had some questions...
1) What is recommended for a first time buy - something that will do the job and that is to stop someone if they break in 2) What are some of the good online sites to purchase a gun such as a glock? I found out yesterday that there are no stores that sell handguns in Madison...thought that was odd 3) Does anyone know of a site listing what guns are outlawed by state or county of there is such a thing? I am in Wisconsin, Dane County. 4) Same as above but looking for a place to learn proper handling, shooting, cleaning of the handgun Any help would be appreciated. |
Re: Need info...
Here is a dealer that sells a lot of used guns from police departments. Excellent prices.
Guns must be shipped to a dealer in your area. So you will have to pay for the gun, shipping and a fee to your local dealer. http://www.summitgunbroker.com/ |
Re: Need info...
you need a 9mm - sounds like this is new to you - so you need one w/ an EXTERNAL manual safety. - which means - I DO NOT recommend a Glock as your 1st pistol.

Re: Need info...
Sounds like you have no firearms training. Find a school or instructor that can show you how to handle a weapon safely. Usually you can try out different guns at these classes to get a feel for what you like. The most important thing is the fit of the gun in your hand. I have been monkey hands and have to put aftermarket grips on my Sig 9mm pistols to make them right for me. Get training and PRACTICE. It does no good if the gun sits in the safe all year.

Re: Need info...
shooting ranges sometimes have guns to rent, classes, and a wide variety. call around.

Re: Need info...
+1 basic firearms training classes...best place to start...as soon as possible.

Re: Need info...
even if your not ready to take a class now at least get on the list for one.....im in a mid sized city and last spring there was a 4 month wait at one place and a 2 month wait at another place. it was a great class and made me feel very comfortable operating a firearm correctly and safely.....id like to take an advanced/ defensive skills class down the road.

Re: Need info...
1) Try before you buy! There really isn't a "best gun" that suits everyone, and practice with the weapon is going to be the larger part of the equation. If you can't find a class or a range that will allow you to try or rent a variety of guns, at least go to a gun store and hold whatever you're interested in to see how good it feels in your hand. Don't be bashful about 'fessing up to being a first-time gun buyer. First-time buyers aren't at all uncommon. The folks behind the counter can be very helpful. Shop around and look at prices, etc., before you buy.
That said, if you're a first-timer looking for home defense, revolvers are a popular choice. The most common calibers for defense are .38, .357, .40, and. 45. Most .357s will also take .38 ammo. 2) Gunbroker.com, which was recommended above is great. This site is fun for just checking out the specs on various guns: http://www.galleryofguns.com/genie/default.aspx 3) http://crime.about.com/od/gunlawsbys.../gunlaw_wi.htm http://www.gunlaws.com/links/linkswi.htm 4) Here's a list of NRA shooting classes in Wisconsin. It looks like some aren't too far from you. http://www.nrahq.org/education/train...on=USAWI&Type= Here are some places to shoot in Wisconsin. http://www.wheretoshoot.org/Find_Ran...subresults.asp Many ranges offer shooting classes. If you Google "gun store Madison Wisconsin," you'll get a list of gun stores in or near Madison. It looks like at least some of them sell handguns. |

Re: Need info...
I also recommend a revolver until you are comfortable handling a handgun, or even a .22 might be good to start with. The 22 would allow you to get lots of cheap practice in and would be a good plinker to have around after you decide what defensive gun and caliber you want.
